Dog Outdoor Clothing – What, When and for Whom?

Dog outdoor clothing often sparks opinions, but in reality it’s not about trends or cuteness. It’s about comfort, protection, and making sure being outdoors feels good for your dog – regardless of the weather or season.

Every dog is an individual. Breed, coat type, size, and age all influence what kind of outdoor clothing a dog needs – or whether they need any at all. In this guide, we take a closer look at how to choose the right clothing for different situations, and why even a small extra layer can sometimes make a big difference to a dog’s wellbeing.

Not all dogs need a coat in winter

Not all dogs need a coat.

Does a dog need clothes – or not?

Not all dogs need a coat, and that’s completely okay.

Double-coated dogs, such as huskies, akitas, or samoyeds, are built for cold conditions. Their coats provide excellent insulation and naturally regulate body temperature. In most cases, these dogs cope perfectly well without a coat, even in freezing temperatures.

That said, it doesn’t mean they can’t need other forms of protection.

Especially in winter, cold temperatures, ice, sharp gravel, and road salt put significant strain on paws – even for double-coated dogs. This is where dog boots become an important part of outdoor gear.

How can you tell if your dog needs boots?

A dog’s behavior tells you a lot, if you know what to look for:

  • the dog lifts its paws or stops frequently during walks
  • movement becomes cautious or uneven
  • the dog constantly licks or tries to clean its paws
  • paws appear dry, red, or cracked

Dog boots protect not only from the cold, but also from chemicals and abrasive surfaces. For many dogs, boots make walks longer and noticeably more comfortable.

Practical winter coats for dogs

The CushyCushy winter overall keeps dogs warm even in temperatures down to -10°C. Staey’s Nora winter coat features a practical harness opening on the back for everyday ease.

When is a winter coat the right choice?

A winter coat is especially important for dogs without a thick coat or for those that get cold easily. This often includes short-haired breeds, small dogs, slim-bodied dogs, as well as senior dogs or those with joint issues.

A good winter coat:

  • protects the back, chest, and core area
  • keeps the dog warm without causing overheating
  • allows free and natural movement

Practicality matters. A harness opening on the back makes everyday life much easier, as the coat doesn’t need to be removed or adjusted around the harness. Many coats, such as the CLOUD7 Alaska and the Staey Nora, include this feature.

Layering dog outdoor clothing

The Rukka Pets Warm Up winter coat provides warmth, while the PAIKKA Seawool shirt works perfectly as a mid-layer under a winter or wind coat.

Layering – for dogs too

In very cold conditions, one layer isn’t always enough.

A mid-layer, such as a lightweight fleece or knit, can be added under a winter coat to provide extra warmth and help maintain a stable body temperature. This is especially useful during long walks or in extreme cold. For example, the PAIKKA Seawool shirt works well as a mid-layer.

It’s important to consider this already when choosing the coat size. If the coat is too snug, there won’t be room for layering, resulting in discomfort – and in the worst case, restricted movement.

When is a wind jacket enough?

A wind jacket is an excellent choice when the weather is cool but dry and there’s no real frost. It protects against wind and helps retain body heat without heavy insulation.

A wind jacket works well for:

  • spring and autumn
  • active dogs
  • situations where a dog gets cold easily but doesn’t need a full winter coat

For many dogs, it’s an everyday garment that’s useful for most of the year. A lightweight fleece layer can also be added underneath when needed.

When is a raincoat the best solution?

A raincoat is not designed to keep warm, but to protect against moisture.

It’s particularly useful for dogs who:

  • dislike getting wet
  • get cold when damp
  • have long coats that need protection from moisture
  • spend a lot of time outdoors in rain or sleet

A raincoat helps keep the coat and skin dry, reducing the risk of chills and skin issues. In cooler weather, it works well combined with a mid-layer as part of lightweight layering.

The right size and fit make all the difference

Outdoor clothing should never be a compromise.

A well-fitting garment:

  • doesn’t restrict the chest or underarms
  • doesn’t slip or twist during movement
  • protects the right areas without interfering with the dog’s stride

Outdoor coats are also available in breed-specific designs. For example, dachshunds, sighthounds, and bulldogs have coats tailored to their unique body shapes, with proportions, fit, and freedom of movement designed specifically for the breed. Choosing a coat made for your dog’s breed ensures better fit, stays in place during movement, and feels comfortable throughout the walk.

In conclusion: a warm dog, a smoother everyday life

Dog outdoor clothing isn’t unnecessary pampering – it’s a thoughtful way to support your dog’s wellbeing and make everyday life easier. The right clothing protects from the elements, extends walks, and makes outdoor time more enjoyable.

At Ruffy, we believe practicality and style can go hand in hand. When your dog feels good, it shows – and you can feel it on every walk.

Let’s head outside smartly, in all weather conditions.
